Artist Statement

photographer In my photography I attempt to reflect two central characteristics - fragility and ingenuity. Most of the time, one is obviously apparent and the challenge for me is to look for the other in the picture I create and the effect my photograph has on the viewer. I am drawn to the ways in which these two facets of nature have endured as a backdrop to mankind's evolution. Black and white photography is a powerful medium with which to explore these central themes as it helps to strip out the many distractions that can prevent us from enjoying this fascinating relationship.

About the Photographer

Photography has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. I was born in Manchester, England in 1977 and have been making photographs since I was a teenager. When digital photography came along, I was somewhat skeptical at first. The technology simply lagged behind the traditional darkroom print. However, by 2004, I had started to use a digital DSLR and today I shoot exclusively in digital.

About your print

All the photos displayed here on these pages are printed on Hahnemuhle 308 gsm photo rag. A smooth white 100% rag based paper specifically designed to meet the need of photographers using digital photographic output. The 308gsm Photo Rag is considered to be the industry standard.

hahnemuhle

"This is the gold standard against which other papers are compared. At Professional Image Maker we always put a couple of sheets through any new printer we are reviewing - it provides us with a baseline"

Mike McNamee - editor "Professional Image Maker" magazine.

This paper provides museum-quality, archival fine art, photographic photos with outstanding durability and fade-resistance for more than 100 years. The printing process is infact more stable and lasts longer than traditional darkroom photography. Visit the Hahnemuhle website for more information.

Packaging of your print

Photos are packaged securely in robust packaging to prevent damage in transit. Matted photos are shipped in boxes. I ensure the photos are bubble wrapped to prevent bending of the matting. Unmatted photos are shipped in robust tubes. This helps to keep down the cost of shipping. In the rare event that your print is damaged, please return the damaged print to me and I will ship you a replacement.

Paying for your print

Biography

Born?

Oldham, England. 1977.

Education?

Manchester University.

How long have you been taking pictures?

I have been taking pictures for as long as I can remember. As a child, I used a 50mm 1.4 lens on a Praktica and 35mm film. I have been using digital since 2003. I shoot with a number of different DSLRs and use Sigma EX line professional lenses currently.

I set up this website to showcase my work to a larger audience and been selling via the web since 2002. The site has helped me achieve my original objective. I have customers from USA, Singapore, Russia, China, Australia, Canada and UK

Do you use any photo-editing software?

These days, I mainly use Lightroom. It allows images to be edited quickly and in bulk. Black and white toning, cropping etc. I don't generally do massive amounts of manipulations. I like my photography to look like photography

When shooting, how do you work?

I tend to shoot fairly slowly. I set my camera to the RAW setting and generally think through the shot before I take it. Waiting for the right light and anticipating it helps. A lot of DSLR cameras today come with a many different settings. I tend to think many of these are gimicks. I shoot mostly in Aperture and Manual modes. This allows you more control of the camera as a tool.

What advice would you give to apsiring photographers?

Learn the basics. Many cameras today have features that make photographers lazy. Learn how to use your DSLR like an old analogue SLR. i.e Shooting in M, A and S modes. Think through your shots and anticipate them. Think about what effect you are trying to achieve.

What lenses do you use and why?

As I said, I mainly use Sigma EX lenses. Good glass is fundamental. Typically, I carry 3 lenses.

10-20mm wide angle

28-70 Zoom

70-200 Telephoto

These allow me to cover most eventualities. I sometimes shoot with a 30mm 1.4 EX lens when situations such as low light, very shallow depth of field etc present themselves.
