Happy Valley Race Course, Hong Kong

23 07 2008

Happy Valley race course in Hong Kong is a bizarre stadium under any measure. Surrounded on all sides by towering apartment blocks and buildings, seeing is believing. It was first built in 1845 to provide horse racing for the British people in Hong Kong. Before it was built, the area was a swampland, but also the only flat ground suitable for horse racing on Hong Kong Island. To make way for the racecourse, Hong Kong Government prohibited rice growing by villages in the surrounding area.

This image shows the race course when first built.

Happy Valley

Today, the place couldn’t look more different.

Night races are every Wednesday in the season.

I took a couple of images when I was there and was most happiest with this one.

Kowloon Canton Railway Clock Tower, Kowloon, Hong Kong

15 02 2008
KCR clock tower
The original Kowloon-Canton Railway was opened in 1911 as a rail link between Kowloon in Hong Kong, then a British crown colony, and the Chinese city of Canton (now Guangzhou). At Tsim Sha Tsui, on Kowloon, stand this impressive clock tower. A symbol of a bygone era. The clock tower is all that is left of the old station at Kowloon. In 1974, the station was relocated to Hung Hom. More Hong Kong pictures can be found on my site at www.picturesforwalls.com

The earliest record of a ferry between Hong Kong Island and the mainland dates back to 1888.  Anyone who has travelled on the Ferry today will know that not much seems to have changed in between!

Limited Editions now on sale

29 10 2007

It’s took a while but I have finally managed to get my limited editions on the website. Each one is limited to 50. I will sign and number them both on the print itself and on the matt. I decided that 18 inches by 12 inches or thereabouts was probably the best way to go. Each print is matted on white, acid-free board and then overmatted with 4-ply bevel-cut overmat. I am using 20 x 24 inch matts. To have a look at the gallery click on the link below. I have tried to include photographic images from Hong Kong, Rio De Janeiro, Istanbul, Morocco and more.
