Venice is full of tight canal waterways and hidden secrets. The black and white pictures in this gallery were mainly taken very early in the morning before the hordes of tourists arrived. The Doge's Palace is a gothic palace on St Mark's square. In Italian it is called the Palazzo Ducale di Venezia. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice. Saint Mark's Basilica (Italian: Basilica di San Marco a Venezia), the cathedral of Venice, is the most famous of the city's churches and one of the best known examples of Byzantine architecture.The Bridge of Sighs is one of many bridges in Venice but perhaps one of the most famous. It gets its name from the noises that used to emanate from prisoners who used the bridge to walk from the prison to the courts in the Doge's Palace.
